I study mechanical engineering at Rice. The problems I find worth solving tend to be physical ones: a machine wearing out, tissue tearing. Software is usually the quickest way to get at them. I come up with ideas that turn into easy solutions for real problems, then build them as far as I can take them.
The projects here started that way. The dashboard came out of a conversation with my brother, a scheduler, about how often assets fail with no warning at all, and the thought that followed: what if there was a way to get a little heads up. Innerslice came from tearing my hamstring and being handed an MRI I had no way to read. Bramwell was the first one someone else asked for: a group reviewing private equity fund agreements wanted a tool that would rate the terms and point at the clauses, so I built it, delivered it, and installed it on their machines.
That job became a business. Slipstream Systems is where I do this for clients now: they bring the tedious, repetitive work they have gotten used to, and I build the tool that takes it off their plate.
These projects keep evolving as the tools around them improve. When a new model comes out that is better at something the last one could not quite manage, I run the project through it and let it improve what it finds. What I enjoy most is finding that something I built months ago still has more in it.
The part I keep coming back to is where an idea stops being a description and starts being something a person can actually use.
